A Sanctuary Between City and Nature
Set at the threshold between the city and the region’s celebrated natural landmarks, and wedged between the bypass roads of a major intersection, HTBY by CREATIVE TERRITORIES proposes a sanctuary landscape: a place of deceleration that prepares visitors to meet nature before they arrive at it. Rather than compete with the velocity of the surrounding infrastructure, the project turns inward, offering calm, shade and spatial contrast as an act of preparation.
Material thinking is organised around a duality. Pigment-integrated concrete, its palette drawn from the distinctive river stones of the locality, is worked in two registers: a precise, clean finish set against a rough, tactile surface. Within the disciplined geometry of the building, free-formed columns and facade elements remain concealed until encountered, so that organic form quietly unsettles orthogonal order. Modernity and nature are not opposed here; they are held in productive tension.
The masterplan is conceived as an open framework rather than a fixed composition. Volumes, circulation and landscape are arranged so that additional rooms or future programme can be absorbed without compromising the integrity of the whole, allowing the sanctuary to mature over time.
Planting completes the narrative. The Yellow Silk Cotton Tree (Cochlospermum regium), the provincial tree, marks the main arrival and anchors the sanctuary courtyard. From December to March it blooms, transforming both thresholds into a golden-yellow landscape: a seasonal event that binds architecture to place, and to time.
